Hanyang University | Seongdong-gu

Hanyang University is a private research university that was founded in 1939 with a focus on engineering. Since then, it has added many other programs, but their engineering program is highly ranked. Its educational philosophy is based on the motto “Love in Deed and Truth” and thus Hanyang University aims to create a close-knit student body, who will later use their knowledge to give back to society.

Hanyang University has two campuses, the main campus is in Seoul and the Education Research Industry Cluster Ansan (ERICA) is in Ansan. The Seoul campus is comprised of 16 colleges and 62 departments whereas the ERICA campus is made up of 9 colleges and 45 departments. The University has 1 graduate school, 6 professional graduate schools, and 10 specialized graduate schools.

Hanyang University has numerous exchange programs and also offers some degree programs for international students. Especially its engineering programs and GSIS are options for English speakers.

Admission

The university welcomes over 7,400 foreign students each year and more than 3,000 students study abroad annually. 

For international students, the admissions process begins online and then is followed by an admission test, interview, and performance test, and then an admission result announcement. Those who satisfy the Korean language proficiency standards do not need to apply for the language institute. 

Applicants should apply to the Seoul and ERICA campus separately as each campus has a different admission procedure. 

Programs

Hanyang University has academic exchange agreements with 777 overseas institutions in 76 countries. The exchange program yearly receives over 1,200 students from partner universities around the world. 

The ERICA Campus hosts an intensive Korean Language Course that lasts 10 weeks. The course is held 5 days per week for four hours each day. There are 6 groups for this course: Basic 1 & 2, Intermediate 1 & 2, and Advanced 1 & 2.

Tuition & Fees

 When applying to Hanyang University, applicants are required to pay 138,000 KRW and an admission fee of 506,000 KRW after acceptance. Tuition costs vary depending on what field of study the student selects.

Scholarships

There are a few options for international students who are interested in receiving a scholarship.

Those eligible for the Hanyang International Excellence Awards are international students with a minimum 3.0 GPA from the previous semester and have received a TOPIK level certificate. The benefits of this scholarship span one semester and recipients receive 70, 50, or 30 percent tuition reduction according to evaluation results.

The candidates for the Global Korea Scholarship must be international students who are in sophomore/junior/senior year, a minimum GPA of 80 on a 100 scale, and hold a TOPIK level 4 or above. The scholarship provides a monthly allowance of 500,000 KRW for 12 months. 

Students who can apply for the TOPIK Scholarship must be international students enrolled for a degree program and have a TOPIK certificate. This scholarship covers the 40,00 KRW admission fee if the recipient has achieved a level 3, and if a level 4 is achieved, the admission fee as well as a scholarship of 190,000 KRW is provided. 

Campus

There are about 33,000 students that attend Hanyang University and 5,016 faculty members. 

The Seoul campus is 509,394m^2. There are a total of 129 dormitory rooms available for foreign students that vary from rooms for multiple people to rooms for a single person. 

The ERICA campus has an area of 1,312,815m^2. The ERICA campus library has 900,000 materials available.  The library is a great resource that has operating systems for academic information, online databases, and multimedia information.

Notable Alumni

Notable Alumni from Hanyang University include actor Lee Byung-hun, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group Chung Mong-koo, actress Lee Young-ae, and actor Jang Keun-suk.

Ranking

Hanyang was ranked 1st for the number of CEO alumni of venture companies in 2018. QS World University Rankings ranked Hanyang University 150th in 2019.
