Club Cakeshop Seoul: The Home of Itaewon’s Music Scene

Cakeshop has been on the block in Itaewon for a few years now, and in that time it has garnered a reputation one of the best clubs in the underground music scene. Founded by Samuel Swanson, Cakeshop started as a counterculture club that quickly became known for its pension for inviting and attracting DJ’s from all over the world. Occupying a cozy basement next to the famous Tussa skateshop near Noksapyeong Station, it has become wildly popular among music heads and club dance aficionados.

Music: EDM and Art from Around the World in Yongsan-gu

Cakeshop features deejays that spin the full gamut of musical genres: from house, UK bass, garage and hip hop, to R & B, and even disco. Early on, Cakeshop began inviting in-country and international artists and DJ’s, as well as lesser known “undiscovered” artists from inside Korea. This strategy culminated in an eclectic mix of music and art that has led Cakeshop to its dominant perch atop the underground music scene. Cakeshop is also frequented by a strong contingent of hip urbanites heavily into fashion, so dress wisely.

A True Underground Feel for Itaewon-dong

Cakeshop is located just across the street from Exit 3 of Noksapyeong Station. When the sun goes down, the red neon sign is hard to miss. The narrow stairway to the basement gives way to a red and black, exposed concrete interior. The low ceilings give it an intimate, true “underground” feel. But not to worry: the dance floor is spacious.
