South Korea has smallest boost in Internet Speed of Top 10 countries

It has been well-established that South Korea has very fast internet speeds. In fact, it has the fastest average internet speed in the world at 22.2 Mbps. For comparison, the United States has a reported average of 11.1 Mbps and the UK has an average internet speed of 10.9 Mbps. However, according to the latest quarterly “State of the Internet” report from Akamai, South Korea has seen a quarterly internet speed change of -12% and only 1.6% growth over the past year overall. Hong Kong, with the second fastest average internet speeds at 16.8 Mbps, has seen a comfortable quarterly increase of 3.4% and a yearly growth of a whopping 36%. If these trends continue, Hong Kong might overtake Korea for the title of “fastest internet.”

That being said, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea remain the only three countries to break the “peak connection speed” benchmark of 70 Mbps according to the report from Akamai. In addition, the number of unique IPv4 addresses seen in South Korea had a significant increase of 6.6%.
