Last year’s Six Star Salute gala

Throughout Korea, many brave members of the United States Armed Forces, the Republic of Korea Military and the United Nations Command are stationed, living and working in a place far from home. To honor some of these troops, the United Service Organization (USO) will host its 44th annual Six Star Salute gala at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on April 9th. The USO is a nonprofit organization, which arranges programs, services and entertainment for U.S. service members and their families, under the mission to “lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families.” As a non-government agency, it relies on funding from private corporations and individuals.

A group of Korean and American civic leaders initiated the first USO Korea Six Star Salute gala in 1970 as a way to express their gratitude. Every year, the honorary rank of “Six Star” is awarded to eighty junior enlisted personnel from the Republic of Korea, the United States and United Nations Command. More than 700 guests from the business, military and political sectors attend the event and guests of honor traditionally include the Republic of Korea Minister of National Defense, the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Korea and the Commander of the United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea, among others.

The evening of festivities will be filled with incredible food, performances and ceremonies to acknowledge the selected troops for their devotion and hard work.
