Route 66 was one of the original highways in the United States. Established November 11, 1926 the highway became the most traveled on road, originally covering a total of 2448 miles (3940km)! Route 66 served as an important path as many people migrated west and supported businessmen and the growth of towns along the highway.
Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after being replaced by the Interstate Highway System.
